There has been a lot of talk from many folks about how horror movies are not what they used to be. There has been a lot of talk about how the class and fun among other things have not been carried on with these films through the years. Some blame it on CGI, while others feel that there is just nowhere else to go.

Admittedly I have to agree that horror is not what it once was. However Hollywood is not what it once was. This also spreads out to other medias. Video games, hell even music has been effected. What is affecting these beloved entertainments we once enjoyed? What put out the fire that once burned so bright? It’s a funny little thing I like to call “Greedy ass bastards.”

You see everything is being affected by corporate greed.

How many new and original ideas do you think may have been placed on the back burner because the people in charge don’t have faith that it will make them filthy rich? I’d be willing to bet a lot. Instead of seeking the new and thrilling these companies want to make damn good and sure that they make their money back one-thousand fold. So instead of taking Johnny’s cool idea for a flick, they just recycle the same old shit over and over and over again.

It’s what is familiar and what they know the movie goers will seek out. This is the reason why there has been an over saturation of zombies, and hate me if you must but Oh My Young Jezzy, I am over zombies. I have seen every zombie there is by now and every possible way you can kill a zombie. It’s getting old and stale. Creativity has been replaced by stats and what is proven to sell. So in a way the fact that we fork over all of our money does in fact make us a guilty party too. After all “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

However frustrating this realization may be, I for one have hope for the future. Sure we are up poo creek with out a paddle at the current time but if history does in fact repeat it’s self then we can only assume that this is just a rough time for our beloved. There are so many people who adore the horror genre and all things horror, so with this much passion floating around I can feel change tingling in my bones. Also I have noticed that for the past three or so years, if you dig, you will find fantastic movies to be found! I can tell you that every year there is at least 8 new and original films that come out for your viewing pleasures. The Afterdark Horror Fests: 8 Films to Die For.

It’s a breath of fresh air. Sure not every film is a wonderful amazing win, but at least these people have the passion and spunk to seek out new and different things. It’s creative and risk taking, which I will take any day.

There have been some new baby faced writers to emerge recently who are doing amazing things and it makes me so excited to see people who understand and LOVE horror take the wheel instead of these scum bags who keep making movies just to cash in. Creative minds who know the values of a good horror flick.

Ever seen American Mary? Look it up and watch it, for me this movie was a breath of fresh air. If you want a more in depth review of the film there is a review on this site of the movie so go read that next! (American Mary click here)

Oh you thought I was done? Man, I am so sorry…almost there. I want to bitch really quick like about my nemesis CGI for a moment. I highly doubt that any big shot Hollywood producer will read this, but I think most every one can agree, STOP USING SO MUCH CGI DAMN YOU!!!! These jerks are taking away the enjoyment of movies, all movie, not just horror because they are killing the practical effect. It infuriates me. CGI has it’s place and I would never deny that, but for the love of all things dark and dreary WTF??? Why does everything have to be smothered in CGI?

Blood should never be CGI and sets do not belong entirely to the green screen people! We need to be a little more passionate about our films.

I don’t like the look of CGI and for me it just feels cheap and silly. I cannot stand it. How is no one seeing the connection to the introduction of CGI and the fall of the quality film? Film is art, a beautiful art and CGI is the stake through the heart of horror. I say “booooooo”

The horror genre isn’t dying and it never will. For me like all other medias, horror has just hit a bump in the road. Too many creative minds love horror and see it the way I do. For me horror is not just a media that I enjoy, for me it is my lifestyle and I am so far from alone on that. There has bee a rise of great films and I only see brighter days to come.

Til next time….stay haunted ghoulies!!!!
