100 top Horror movie film scores

The top 100 film scores brought to you by the vast horror film knowledge of Lawrence S. Talbot

Lawrence Tolbert

I’ve used my vast knowledge on film scores to compile a list of my 100 favorite horror film scores. You’ll find some really interesting music here. The rankings don’t matter so much because there are so many different styles that it’s hard to really compare many of them. Also, if you’re wondering why genre staples like Nightmare on Elm street and Halloween are ranked so low, it’s because admittedly I find them to be a bit tired and overplayed. Also the phrase “Just because it’s more famous doesn’t mean it’s necessarily better” comes to mind.

Rob Zombie (Music) review by Ashley Sin Derella

caito-rob-zombie2 Rob Zombie

Okay my ghoulies this is going to be my last horror music review for a while and I’m gonna make it a quick. I want to start focusing on movies as I am getting bored… So if The Misfits started the horror genera…who brought it back? Well that my little darlings is all a matter of opinion and mine is someone who before he started making hit or miss horror movies was a God of rock. I, my sweet sexy blood covered ghouls , am speaking about none other than Sir Rob Mother effing Zombie! I had said before that ICP was the first horror music that I found and liked but I was all nervous and insecure about writing reviews at that point and had a brain stroke. I forgot my roots! Punish me ☺

1754

Piggy D. (Bass) Rob, and John 5 (Guitar, John is fucking amazing.)

I will never forget my first experience with Rob Zombie, I had heard of him and his music when he was with White Zombie due to older friends I had but I didn’t really get in to him for myself until I was 12…maybe 13. I was sitting down eating my breakfast watching good MTV and all of a sudden “OMG…what’s this??? Who is this wonderful sexy man fronting this wonderful sexy band?” Okay sure it wasn’t quite like that but I was impressed. The song was Dragula.

-Dragula-rob-zombie-17631088-800-600

I had never heard such relatable music in my whole life. I say relatable because I was from a very, very small age addicted to horror and this music was singing the song of my people! It was like for the first time ever (at this point I had no idea about The Misfits, I was a child) there was music for the horror fan. Cowboys had country, thugs had rap and now we had our music, music for the hopelessly devoted horror fan. God it felt good all over my young flesh. Of course after this I had to get more and oh I did.

The thing about Rob Zombie for me is he really has talent musically; I really do enjoy his songs and wish he would go back to making music more often but what is it about him that I like really? Well Rob unlike other acts feels more evil, more sinister than the rest. Sure Danzig is one evil mother shut your mouth, but Rob just seems twice as scary to me…it’s not just the way he looked (after White Zombie he started doing zombie makeup everyday)  it is the sound of his voice. His voice purrs with the evil sound of sexy demons. Not that demons are sexy but Rob Zombies voice would be the only comparable voice to a sexy demon if there were any.

2135_1359735640

His music makes me want to strip…Living Dead Girl feels to me like our generations Pour Some Sugar on me. I don’t know maybe it’s his hot sexy go-go dancing wife?

Moving on to the music videos! I know I have talked about videos in a lot of these reviews but damn it I do so miss good music videos. Rob’s videos are always fun, trippy and pay homage to classic horror. Your never quite sure what is going on or what to think but it’s so nice all over your feel goods, especially when he started becoming more mainstream. It was new for most people, we just hadn’t seen it yet so these videos really aided in his growth of popularity.

cd-cover

We all know what happened after he stopped making music but I don’t really remember hating any of his music before he stopped. I’m not reviewing him as a movie making dude at this point and maybe one day I will, but I am really sad he stopped making music Rob Zombie to me is one of the greats, so 5 out of 5 brain stabs for our favorite Zombie ❤

The Misfits review by Ashley Sin Derella

Screen Shot 2013-10-31 at 12.31.35 AM

You knew it was coming, you knew it had to be! I cannot, nor would not, review horror music and not cover The Misfits. These brilliant minds not only started this whole movement but consistently kept horror music fresh and awesome. Anybody who loves horror themed music would do good to bow down before the Godfathers of horror music and kiss their jet black boots. The Misfits did it first, The Misfits did it best and The Misfits did it the longest. So here is my review, even though I am sure you know my feelings about it by now. So I am going to just tell you why I think The Misfits are the best damn band to ever grace the world with their talent.

One! Sexy Voices!!!!

If there is any horror themed band that can drop panties faster than The Misfits, please do contact me with proof. The Misfits no matter what singer (or hell even what lyrics you are hearing) always sound stupidly sexy. Both Danzig and Graves have that deep booming voice. Both make those pretty haunting “whoooas” and “ooooohhhsss” that make you forget that they are singing about murder and other not so pretty acts. Horror music is no stranger to sounding romantic and there is romantic beauty in the macabre, but The Misfits are not romantic…The Misfits SOUND romantic. They can be romantic, I guess, but mostly the lyrics are wicked and they say some pretty fucked shit, but like a siren they lore you in with pretty voices. Also both Danzig and Graves have an amazing range vocally then you throw in the 50’s doo whoop and the punk rock and all of a sudden it’s wet panties central…just like 50 Shades of Gray only better because talent dictates these things.

Two!  Nostalgic content!

Who the fuck hasn’t seen Universal Monster Movies???? Well, maybe a lot of people but those are people we don’t really know here at the Aficionados so for people like us hearing lines from or figuring out what movie they are singing about is fun. You hear “we belong dead” and you get a smile on your face because you know they are referencing The Bride Of Frankenstein and you’re like….”Fuck yes!” it feels good and it was extremely smart for The Misfits to play tribute to these movies through their music. Everyone like to feel nostalgic but when it comes in the form of something new we all get excited. Think about how you feel when the remake of a movie comes out. Your all “blah blah it’s gonna suck” to your friends but deep down inside you are excited and can’t wait to see that shit. Why? Because your child hood memories live but it’s something fresh and new. That is what The Misfits did and why I think they are one of the more universally loved bands… hell even Cee Lo Green likes The Misfits. They knew that people would appreciate the tributes. Just to note they do have a lot of horror themed songs that are not about any movie at all for those that may not be familiar with this band.

Here The Misfits are with Vampira whom they wrote a song about.

Three! Videos!

Screen Shot 2013-10-31 at 12.32.05 AM

The Misfits were in their prime when music videos were the shit. Little low budget movies that rocked our socks off and as low budget horror has always been a thing all it’s own The Misfits would naturally make amazing videos. Cheeky horror with just enough grit to make you feel like maybe these guys are psychopaths. They didn’t make a whole bunch of videos but the videos they did make where amazing at least to me. You forget how short a Misfits song is when you hear it and see a video because they are able to tell a story and make a film start to finish in under 3 minutes. Their videos are short films and they are done so well that it counts toward their rating.  Seriously watch the video for American Psycho and tell me that video is not amazing.

 SIDE NOTE! Graves Vs. Danzig

Screen Shot 2013-10-31 at 12.32.22 AM

You will hear a lot of Misfits fans argue that one singer is better than the other. For me I love the both of them and feel that neither of them is any better than the other really. They both work well with the band and are equals when it comes to talent. I will say I’d rather listen to and enjoy Graves more, only because he doesn’t take it to such a dark extreme as Danzig did. Hell after Danzig left Jerry Only started a Christian punk band for a little bit because he felt bad for some of the songs he had preformed. And as someone who loves punk rock you must admit that Graves era is more punkrocky. When it comes down to it though I love this band as a whole, both singers and I know I always will. So for that…

The Misfits 5 out of 5 Brain stabs……duh.

Insane Clown Posse “ICP” review by Sin Derella

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 5.52.58 PM

If you know who ICP is than it should go without saying I need to review this band as one of my pieces on horror related music. ICP are one of the world’s most universally hated music groups but accomplished a lot by paving the way for a new genera  called“Horror Rap”. As someone who was a fan of ICP and now cannot stand them I will try to give an honest review and hopefully it will be fair.

I remember the first time I heard ICP. I was thirteen and I thought “WOW! It’s just like listening to a horror movie!” I was in love. This music had a cheeky sound that put you to mind of those wonderful 80’s slasher films we all love but darker. Not only did songs tell a story but entire albums would tell one continuous story. It almost at times felt like the old radio shows or a horror comic book. You waited for the next chapter. That was the fun for me. That is what caught my ear.  As far as being horror related they DID meet the criteria at first and they did it well.

I will say they meet the standard expectations necessary to be considered rap as well. They can rhyme, they have hooks, and they make sense. When they first started it was during the days of Korn and Limp Biscuit so there was this metal, rock, rap orgy thing that was going on at the time that was an obvious influencing sound for ICP.  Through the years that style of music became obsolete as all music will and ICP became more and more rap influenced. This did not work in their benefit. They became more cocky, their fans became more cock and stupid, and it influenced both their fan base and their sound in unfortunate ways.

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 5.53.14 PM

(Yes these gangsters are ICP and company for their side project Psychopathic Rydas. A far cry from their roots and ridiculous.)

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 5.53.34 PM

Yes, at one time ICP was Rap Horror but that is not what they are or have been in a really long time. I used all of this to rate them. I do not like them anymore and haven’t for a while but they started a whole new sub-genera that was an original a concept and they did know what they were doing. So in being fair as I promised I would I give them a 3 out of  brain stabs. Haters are going to hate. Till next time stay haunted ghoulies!

3 out of 5 stabs!

Creepshow (the Band) reviewed by Ashley Sin Derella

          Creepshow

1368983_10201493828280294_474030879_n

We love horror here at aficionados and through the years we have found there are many ways to get our horror fix. One of my personal favorite ways to get that fix is with horror music. Typically psychobilly, but not always, I want to get you in the know of one of my all time favorite parts of the horror culture in hopes I may turn some of you on to this. So over the next few weeks I will be writing segments on the good, the bad and the ugly of the different horror music scenes.

To kick this off I will be focusing on one of the better acts to grace this movement, one of my all time favorites, The Creepshow. Even their name promises horror and I must say this band really knows how to do it the right way. To be considered horror music, at least in my opinion, your songs have got to tell a horror story, some bands in this genera fail miserably at this and instead focus on simply looking scary. The Creepshow however will deliver a horror story in every single song. With each sentence you’re taken deeper into a spooky tale you may expect to hear around a camp fire. For instance the song Sleep Tight: “Oh, sleep tight my boy you should’ve though it out oh you can’t kill a girl
without her soul sticking around Oh sleep tight my boy I’ve been watching with undead eyes”  This song takes inspiration from A Tale Tale Heart. In the song Sarah is singing to the boyfriend who murdered her. Now she is stuck watching his every move. Done in a du wop fashion this song is a truly haunting and beautiful example of why this music captured my heart. I must mention that it is very common for horror related music to tell a story based off of another horror media (The Misfits where the ones we can thank for this but we will get to them later) If you listen to the good bands you will always find hints of inspiration from horror classics. The Creepshow perfected this with their Devine talents.

Another wonderful thing that The Creepshow excels at is atmosphere. They do this by making their music sound haunted. They have a key board player who sets his keys to sound like organs and in most songs the other members of the band make “whoooa” sounds which put me to mind of ghosts moaning in a grave yard somewhere. It makes their songs sound like they have their own sound effect/sound tracks inside of the songs themselves and for me this really raises the bar. You hear those keys companied by these moans and you get the impression that you may run into The Phantom of The Opera or another ghastly figure if you wait around too long but you are hypnotized by the music so you’ll stay, just a moment longer, even though you know damn well you shouldn’t.

The last thing I’d like to discuss is their style. The Creepshow are pros at mixing punk rock and psychobilly. Most psycobilly music is just that, psychobilly. It has a pinch of punk rock but is mostly just faster rockabilly. Not this band they really know how to work this shit.

1371417_10201493829040313_355867557_n

Their songs deliver that punk rock feel so flawlessly that people will react to their performances the way they would at a NoFx show. By moshing and jumping and having the fucking time of their lives. You feel this music the way you feel punk rock. It moves you the way punk moves you and there is no better way to describe it than that. You feel The Creepshows music in every single fiber of your being. If you don’t know what I mean because you don’t listen to punk or psychobilly then you really must check both out.

I am passionate about this music because this music is not just some cheap auto tuned garbage being force feed down our throats. This music takes talent from every single member. These are short spooky stories. As a lover of horror I can really get down on that shit. I appreciate getting a break from the boring music about love and heartbreak and the injustice of it all and embrace the fun, it’s the same fun that makes us watch Halloween every October or gets us to go out to haunted walks. I would suggest you find the Album Run For Your Life as a good introduction to this band. I will rate The Creepshow 3.5 out of 5 brain stabs only because they have had three different lead vocalists throughout the years and that just annoys me.  Until next time, stay haunted!
